Learning Pilates Basics with my daughter at Pilates on Collingwood Street Albion

The worry I hear most isn’t really one thing. For some it’s the body itself: stiffness that’s crept in over the years, a balance that doesn’t feel as sure as it used to, an old injury that’s flared up enough times to make you wary of trying anything new. For others it’s simply not having exercised properly in years and not knowing where to start. And for plenty of people it’s quieter than that: a worry about being the oldest one in the room, or the least capable, before they’ve even walked through the door.

All three are completely reasonable things to bring with you, and it’s exactly why we don’t put everyone into the same class on day one.

If you’re starting from nothing, or starting again after years away, our Beginners Program is built for that pace. Six classes over three weeks: the first two on the floor learning to find correct positioning and basic activation, then four more on the Reformer once that foundation is there. Nobody’s rushed through it. If balance or stiffness is the bigger concern, Ageing Strong might be the better starting point instead, with streams built specifically around mobility and strength for that stage of life. Either way, we talk it through with you first so you start in the right place, not just the nearest one.

What tends to surprise people most isn’t how hard the first class is. It’s how much attention they get. With a maximum of eight people in the room, an instructor can actually see how you’re moving, adjust what needs adjusting and tell you honestly what your body is ready for, rather than guessing. Nobody’s watching to see if you keep up. Everybody’s watching to see if you’re doing it right, which is a completely different thing.

Ella came to us worried that starting might be intimidating. In her words: “I was worried starting Pilates might be intimidating, but the Beginner Pilates course with Jane has been so much fun, and I feel I’ve learnt so much in just 4 weeks.”

There’s no age where it becomes too late to start. There’s just a right pace to start at, and that’s something worth a conversation, not a guess. Come in, tell us what’s been holding you back, whether it’s stiffness, fitness history or simply nerves about starting something new, and we’ll work out together whether the Beginners Program or Ageing Strong is the right fit to begin with.
